Two Thrifted Coats

This fall I bought the longer coat in this post. I found it at a garage sale in Brooklyn, NY.  I had wanted a coat like this, for the warmer days when it is above thirty five degrees. This one appealed to me since it had a vintage inspired look to it. It is designed by Lida Baday. I wanted something nice to go with a shawl I have from my grandmother.   It is a good coat to wear on interviews for instance, as long as it is not too cold. My silk scarf was a gift.

On the really cold days I wear my down parka, which I bought new and it really isn’t a pretty coat. It keeps me warm so it does do its job. I haven’t had good luck with down coats in New York. They seem to get dirty and worn looking quickly due to the subways and city wear and tear.  Even the black down coats!

The shorter coat here is one I found over 20 years ago in the lower east side of Manhattan, NY. I think it was designed in Europe. It says “Combatteno” on the label but I found nothing about that brand online. This little jacket has gotten me through many falls and springs through the years. Recently the sleeves were literally shredding and falling apart so I sewed some ribbon on to trim it and hand stitched it to bind up the tatters. Now it is fine and ready for many more years of wear.   It also looks nice with the shawl that my cousin upcycled for me, which can work as a hat as well, if it starts snowing or gets windy.  I obviously try to take care of the items in my wardrobe that I treasure. I really don’t like to toss things that are still good, particularly those with a classic look. The skirt I wore with the shorter coat is a Liberty of London skirt from the 1980’s.
